Determining if a plant extract contains antibiotics
Apparatus needed:
Different types of plant
Bread
Distilled water
Heating material
Electronic weighting scale
Filter paper
Beaker
Timer
Funnel
Petri dish
Gahyeon Park
Step 1
Prepare 2g of 3 different types of plants and add 50cm^3 of distilled water into that beaker. Now heat these 3 beakers for the same duration and extract the solution using filtration process.
Step 2
Prepare 4 pieces of bread cut into equal size. Then soak the bread into each solution including the distilled water and keep it on a petri dish. Leave it for some time for the change to occur. (Don't forget to label the petri dishes)
! Final Result !
As a result of being placed under the same environmental conditions for the same period of time, the most severely decomposed piece of bread in distilled water was the one in which microorganisms, including fungi, reproduced less microorganisms in the extract than in the slice in distilled water. Therefore, the extract contains natural antibiotics that inhibit the growth of microorganisms. (Solution C had no change)
